Annual Queen Lili’uokalani Long Distance Outrigger Canoe Races

The 2018 Queen Lili`uokalani Long Distance Outrigger Canoe Races welcomes more than 2,500 outrigger canoe paddlers to Kona for its signature 18-mile long distance race, the world’s largest long distance outrigger canoe race. Kai `Opua Canoe Club, one of Hawaii’s oldest outrigger canoe clubs, will host crews from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, Tahiti, United Kingdom and an estimated 75 crews from the US.

Other official Race events unfold throughout the holiday weekend including Historic Kailua Village Cultural Walk, Paddling Talk Story, Native Artist Fair, Torchlight Parade, Stand-up Paddleboard Race, Ali`i Challenge and, new this year, Hulakai OC4 (4 person canoes) Sprint Relay Race.

September TBA, 2018 – Parker Ranch Labor Day Rodeo & Horse Auction – Waimea

Two days of rodeo events to be held at the Parker Ranch Rodeo Arena in Waimea. The event is a fundraiser to provide educational scholarships for school-age children of Parker Ranch employees.

Saturday 12 pm:  Family-style fun with rodeo events like team roping, double mugging, bull riding, junior bull riding, wahine barrel racing and breakaway roping and more. The century team roping competition when one team member must be over the age of 50 and their combined ages must be more than 100. There will also be keiki barrel racing for participants 12 & under, and the calf scramble.

Sunday: The Round-Up Club, in partnership with Parker Ranch, will be hosting a live horse auction. Come at 9 a.m. to register and view the horses; the auction will follow the Sunday morning Rodeo slack.  Time: Noon to 5:00pm. Cost: $7, Presale $8 at gate, 12 under Free.

September TBA, 2018 – “Taste Of The Hawaiian Range” And Agriculture Festival

Hilton Waikoloa Village – Time: 6-8pm.

Culinary adventure seekers can taste and enjoy all the cuts of pasture-raised beef – everything from tongue to tail – prepared expertly by Hawai’i chefs. Enjoy familiar cuts like sirloin tip and ribs, plus beef cheek and the infamous “Rocky Mountain oysters.” While “tasting,” attendees can meet Hawai`i’s food producers at booths and talk story with the ranchers and farmers who make a living growing our food. Attendees can also enjoy exhibits presenting topics related to local agriculture and food sustainability, including the University of Hawai`i’s Mealani Research Station, where the event began. Local food producers also have an opportunity to hook up with island chefs and consumers.

September TBA, 2018 Waimea Paniolo Parade And Ho`Olaule`a Craft Fair

10 AM – Waimea, Free

One of our favorite yearly events, the Paniolo Parade will start at 10am at “Church Row” (Waimea Cherry Blossom Park) and proceed to Waimea Baseball Field, featuring princesses on horseback with attendees decorated with the flowers of their respective islands (complete with “Pooper Scooper” brigades!).

The Parade is followed by one of the best crafts show of the year, featuring island foods, games, arts & crafts, Hawaiian products and live entertainment in Waimea Ball Park at 11am to 4pm. A great local family event!

Note: 1 hour road closure in Waimea for the parade.

Celebrating the annual United Nations International Day of Peace, the town of Honoka`a will host a Parade down Mamane Street – a “moving stage” of bands, dancers, drummers and entertainers.

The event then continues with a Peace Day Festival in the streets.

September TBA, 2018 – Farm Fest Open House – Captain Cook

Kona Historical Society’s Kona Coffee Living History Farm will be hosting their annual Farm Fest Open House again at their site in Captain Cook. This year’s celebration theme, honoring Kona’s heritage, is “From Farm to Table”.

A day filled with family-fun activities that revolve around sustainable foods that are made here in Kona, from baked items, cooking demonstrations celebrity chef Sam Choy to a traditional Chicken Hekka plate lunch.

There will also be local music; “hands-on history” activities where you can practice the art of lauhala weaving, Japanese calligraphy, gardening and pan roasting coffee, Kona coffee tastings, an historical photo exhibit, and tours of the historic 1920s coffee mill and farmhouse.

To make parking easier, catch the shuttle (9:30a.m.-3p.m) from Kealakekua Ranch Center that day. Time: 10am to 2pm.

September 29, 2018 – Hawaiian Sunset Saturday

This once a month community event celebrates Kona’s spectacular sunsets with live Hawaiian music and hula on the lawn at Coconut Grove Marketplace starting at 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm every last Saturday of every month.

Everyone’s invited to bring beach chairs, blankets and enjoy beautiful live Hawaiian music and hula while the sun is setting.  When the music is over, enjoy a stroll on Alii Drive, and check out the many food venues and shops.
