It was 51 years ago today that Hawaii became the 50th state. As we learned in yesterday's feature, it was not an easy journey.

In the second part of our special feature, which was written last year for the 50th anniversary, we look at the events that took place from 1952 until 1959 including what turned out to be a major complicating factor to Hawaii Statehood in the form of a place called Alaska.

Today is the Statehood Day holiday in Hawaii, but tomorrow is the actual day which marks the 51st anniversary of Statehood. It has not been an easy journey.

Last year, in honor of the 50th anniversary of Statehood, we completed a two-part feature which we are revisiting here again this week.

In the first part of our feature tracing the road to statehood we start with the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893 and then look briefly at the brief period of government under the Republic of Hawaii.

Annexation by the United States soon followed and by 1903, the new territorial government was working to secure Statehood.

We then trace the road to statehood through the approval of the Hawaii State Constitution in 1950 - still nine years before statehood was obtained.
