At Akaka Falls State Park, located along the northeastern Hamakua Coast, you can see two gorgeous waterfalls on one short hike. The park is about 11 miles (18 km) north from Hilo, west of Honomū off the Hawaii Belt Road (route 19) at the end of Hawaii Route 220, It includes ʻAkaka Falls, a 422 feet (129 m) tall waterfall.

The accessible portion of the park lies high on the right shoulder of the deep gorge into which the waterfall plunges, and the falls can be viewed from several points along a loop trail through the park. It is a pleasant self-guided walk that will take you through a lush rainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves and draping ferns to scenic vista points overlooking the cascading Kahuna Falls and the free-falling ‘Akaka Falls , which plunges 442 feet into a stream-eroded gorge.

As you follow the paved footpath, you’ll first see 100-foot Kahuna Falls. Continue to follow the loop around the bend, and you’ll discover towering Akaka Falls which plummets 442-feet into a stream-eroded gorge. Beautiful Akaka Falls is perhaps Hawaii Island’s most famous waterfall. The 0.4-mile loop footpath is easily accessible and the hike takes less than an hour with some physical exertion.
